Donation puts charity ride on right track

Mr Myer on Topique prepares to hand over $100,000 to Mr Phegan and Mr James for their ride. AN epic horse ride to raise money for cancer research has received a major boost.

Akta-Vite managing director Mr Tony Myer visited Albury yesterday to present $100,000 to the Campfires for Cancer ride organisers Mr Danny Phegan and Mr Ian James. The contribution by the nutritional supplement company will cover marketing as well as fuel and food for the journey, allowing all other money to go directly to cancer research.

This sponsorship really puts us on the road to achieving our goal of raising $500,000 for cancer research,'' Mr Phegan said. It is fantastic to gain the support of an Australian icon such as Akta-Vite. It is a tremendous boost, both financially and in terms of the nutrition for riders taking part in this long and arduous journey.'' The 4500km ride will start in Darwin on June 30 and participants will take 10 months to travel to Corryong.

The four riders and support crew of 12 will visit towns such as Katherine, Mt Isa, Cloncurry and Longreach. Along the way, they will collect cattle from Goondiwindi to the Border region, selling them along the way depending on the conditions. Members of the public are invited to join the riders in the 20-30km a day trek for a donation of $50 a day.
