Music star backs ride
LEE Kernaghan will stage an open-air concert at Towong to complete the Campfires Against Cancer ride led by Albury men Danny Phegan and Ian James.
The country music star will donate his time to help the 11-month ride in 2002-2003 meet a target of  $500,000.As well as closing the ride, the concert, to be at the Towonga racecourse on April 11, 2003, will open the Man from Snowy River Festival.Kernaghan's grandfather, Mr Pat Kernaghan, who lives in Albury, and Mr Phegan's  grandfather, the late Mr Herb Freyer, were mates for more than 60 years.

They went into the Australian Light Horse together and they met their  future wives together,'' Mr Phegan said.``When they were boys they were swimming at Noreuil Park, saw two girls, swam across to them and the rest is history.''Mr Phegan has dedicated the ride to Mr Freyer, who died of cancer in 1993.``Lee is a terrific fellow and we understand he will bring his full 14-member band with him,'' he said.Mr Phegan discussed ride details with the Cancer Council's NSW State events manager, Ms Trudi Mitchell, and Wagga-based regional co-ordinator, Mr Elizabeth Moon, yesterday.,
Judging by the strong local business sponsorship pledged, Mr Phegan was  confident raising $500,000 for cancer research was  achievable. He and Mr James are still seeking sponsors so the event's overheads are  covered and all money donated goes to the Cancer Council.
A party of 12 consisting of riders and support crew will travel from Darwin  to Corryong beginning in June next year.Anyone can join the ride for any length but is expected to donate $50 a day, mostly obtaining their own sponsorship.Details of the ride are available on its website, www.campfiresorg.au.
